Jung Ilhoon Former BTOB Undergoes Appeal Hearing and Forbearance on Marijuana Case

On December 16, Ilhoon headed to the Seoul High Court for an appeal hearing in his marijuana case. Jung Ilhoon was tried on suspicion of buying and smoking 826 grams of marijuana using approximately 130 million KRW (approximately IDR 1.57 billion) in 161 cases between 5 July 2016 and 9 January 2019 along with 7 other victims.

The 13th Criminal Division of the Seoul High Court sentenced Ilhoon to 2 years in prison and 3 years of probation. The court also ordered a personal fine of 160 million KRW (approximately Rp. 1.93 billion) and a 40-hour drug treatment program. Jung Ilhoon, who was sentenced to prison at the first trial and arrested by the court, was commuted to probation at the second trial. According to his suspended sentence, Ilhoon is expected to be released from the Seoul Detention Center.

In his first trial, Jung Ilhoon was sentenced to 2 years in prison and fined 133 million KRW (approximately Rp. 1.61 billion) for violating the Narcotics Control Act, and others, who were later detained. However, both Jung Ilhoon and the prosecution appealed the sentence.

During the appeal hearing, the prosecutor asked for a 2-year prison term and a fine of 126.6 million KRW (approximately IDR 1.53 billion) for marijuana or marijuana charges. At the second appeal hearing, Jung Ilhoon was declared not to be involved in profit-seeking activities such as selling and distributing marijuana.

The court stated, “In Jung Ilhoon's case, he smoked, bought, and used (marijuana) for a long period of time. However, we assume that he voluntarily quit buying and smoking marijuana around January 2019, that he has no criminal record, that he tries to prevent recidivism by receiving psychiatric treatment and attending online lectures for drug addiction, and that his family shows a willingness to mentor him because he has relatively well-maintained social ties.
