NETFLIX Entering the Game World?
After dominating the video streaming market, Netflix is expected to expand into other industries. Recent reports say that Netflix is in the exploration stage to enter the gaming industry.
According to a report by The Information, Netflix is currently reaching out to several major gaming industry figures to recruit executives to run its video game business. In its official statement, Netflix seems to have confirmed these rumors.
“Our members value the diversity and quality of our content. That's why we're expanding our product range – from series to documentaries, films, original content in local languages to reality shows,” said a Netflix spokesperson for IGN, Sunday (23.23.)/5/2021).
"Our members also love being able to interact directly with the stories they love - through interactive events like 'Bandersnatch' and 'You v. Wild' or games based on 'Stranger Things', 'La Casa de Papel' and 'To All' based on people- people.' So we can't wait to create more interactive entertainment.
Netflix's approach seems geared more towards Apple Arcade-style subscription bundles. Apple Arcade is known to offer game packages containing various exclusive games for a subscription fee of $4.99 per month.
The games offered by Netflix do not show ads. It is not known if Netflix will develop the games themselves or work with external developers.
Netflix is actually no stranger to the world of gaming. The streaming giant previously released the Stranger Things game for PC and mobile. They have also adapted many video games into series such as The Witcher, Castlevania, Dota, and others.
Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has also expressed his ambition to enter the gaming industry. In fact, he considers the battle royale game Fortnite to be Netflix's biggest competitor.
