Meta: 50K Facebook and Instagram Users Spyed
Meta announced that 50,000 Facebook and Instagram users had been spied on. The victims were targeted by seven entities and located in more than 100 countries.
Meta details the seven entities in question. One of the entities is said to be unknown, while four of them, Cobwebs Technologies, Cognyte, Black Cube and Bluehawk CI, are from Israel, with three others in China, India and North Macedonia.
In his upload, Meta said there were a number of groups targeted in this spying action. These include journalists, dissidents, critics of authoritarian regimes, opposition families, and human rights activities.
The activity was uncovered in a months-long investigation. Meta has identified the group of spies and removed them from the platform.
"The company is part of a vast industry providing disruptive software and surveillance services without anyone's eyes to any customer. Regardless of who is targeted or human rights abuses may be activated," wrote Meta threat nuisance directors David Agranovich and Mike Dvilyanski, who are head of cyber espionage investigations, quoted from The Verge, Friday (17/12/2021).
They say the industry is 'democratizing' the threat. Tools are available to government groups while non-government groups will not have that capability, the two said.
To NPR, Black Cuber said his company is a supporter of litigation using investigative methods in accordance with local laws in which jurisdictions operate.
Member of Congress, Adam Schiff opened his voice about the disclosure of Meta. He said there was a lot of work to stop the market.
"By allowing indiscriminate scrutiny of journalists and political dissidents, these companies are making a real weave for human rights," Schiff said.
In the same report, Meta also referred to the Israeli spyware company, NSO Group. Last month the company was sued by Meta and Apple for selling spyware that was used to infiltrate iPhones and WhatsApp.
