Rebranding Facebook to Meta, Check out Mark Zuckerberg's explanation

Facebook officially announced the company's new brand by changing its name to Meta on Thursday, October 28, 2021. On the official Facebook page, Meta identified itself as a social technology company.

The various technologies he developed are Facebook app, Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus, Workplace, Portal and Novi. This is in line with what the CEO of Facebook--now Meta--Mark Zuckerberg said that the changes will unite various applications and technologies under one new brand. However, it will not change the company structure.

By making Facebook part of the parent company, the rebranding aims to bring the social media giant's focus to the metaverse, a virtual reality that is at stake as the latest evolution of the mobile internet. "Right now, our brand is so closely tied to one product that it's impossible to represent everything we do today, much less in the future," said Zuckerberg, speaking at a virtual reality and augmented reality conference on Thursday, October 28, 2021.

Metaverse is a term coined in a novel called 'Snow Crash' three decades ago and is now attracting attention in Silicon Valley, United States. Metaverse refers broadly to the idea of a shared virtual world that is accessible to people using different devices.

The tech giant with about 2.9 billion monthly users has also faced increased scrutiny in recent years from lawmakers and global regulators. Even today, Facebook is battling criticism from lawmakers and regulators for its market power, algorithmic decisions, and breaches of its services.

In the latest controversy, whistleblower and former Facebook employee, Frances Haugen, leaked documents showing the company prefers profit over user safety. Haugen has in recent weeks testified before a subcommittee of the American Senate and lawmakers in the British Parliament.

"The document was used to paint a false picture," Mark Zuckerberg said earlier this week, responding to the leak of the document.
